Ever had a meeting where you just knew things were about to get awkward?

People aren't on the same page, tensions are creeping up, and suddenly you've got a problem on your hands.

Here's the thing: conflict happens.

It’s part of running a business, leading a team, or working with clients.

Because of that, it's really important to know how to turn down the temperature and manage the situation to a positive outcome.

Our favorite trick to help keep those conversations calm and productive is just 2 simple words:

"I AGREE".

THE 2 WORDS TO DIFFUSE CONFLICT

Before we go any further, "I agree" DOES NOT mean agreeing with everything the other person is saying.

"I agree" means agreeing with something the other person is saying, and making the common ground clear early on.

When you start with a little bit of agreement:

  • The other person feels acknowledged and heard.
  • You force yourself to consider the other person’s perspective.
  • You open the door to more collaboration and less confrontation.

To do it, all you have to do is listen to what the other person has said, and repeat back to them what you agree with.

Here are some examples to help you find common ground when tensions are high:

  • “I agree this conversation is important.”
  • “I agree we should stick to our values.”
  • “I agree it's important we achieve our goals."

If someone’s already defensive, it’s nearly impossible to solve anything.

But by leading with something you can both agree on, the conversation can become smoother, and resolution more achievable.

Next time a tense situation arises, try to find one thing to agree on from the start and see where it takes you.

It's simple, but super effective.

TLDR:

  • Conflict happens, but here’s one easy way to handle it better: Agree.
  • Start by finding one point of agreement — it lowers defenses n both sides and encourages connection.
  • Building common ground early leads to a calmer, more productive conversation.
