This week, we worked with a client who’s putting tons of effort into his social media.

He’s talking about interesting topics, speaking well, doing all the things.

But his engagement… not exactly what he was hoping for.

Sound familiar?

It’s easy to get discouraged when you don't have the traction you want.

Social media can be finicky - so it’s super important to avoid mistakes that will waste your time.

With that in mind, today we’re sharing some of the advice we gave this client to help them get more traction on social media.

Hopefully it will help you too!

Let’s dive in:

5 SOCIAL MEDIA MISTAKES TO AVOID

1. Ignoring What the Data’s Telling You

It can feel like you need to post lots of content just to keep up.

But the real magic happens when you start paying attention to the data, and posting strategically based on what works.

Even if you’re just starting out, 9 likes is still 50% more than 6 likes - and is worth paying attention to when deciding what kind of post to double down on.

What this means for your business:

Look at what’s working (and what’s not).

  • Which posts are getting the most engagement?
  • Which formats are performing the best?
  • What topics most resonate with people?

Keep testing and tweaking based on this feedback.

Over time, you’ll learn exactly what your audience wants and can focus your energy where it’s most effective.

2. Weak Hooks

We all know how important the first few seconds are, especially in video content.

If you don’t grab attention right away, you’ll lose viewers in a blink.

What this means for your business:

Start your videos with a strong hook that immediately grabs attention.

Instead of leading with “I’m an accountant,” try something like, “Did you know you could be saving hundreds in taxes every year?”

Hook them in, and they’re more likely to stick around to hear the rest.

3. Not Speaking to Your Niche Audience

If you’re talking to everyone, you’re probably not connecting with anyone.

What this means for your business:

Make sure your content speaks directly to your niche.

If you help small business owners, focus on their specific pain points, like tax issues or time management.

It’s all about showing you understand their needs and providing value specifically for them.

4. Not Having a Clear Call to Action (CTA)

You’ve got great content, but if you don’t tell people what to do next, they’ll scroll right on by.

What this means for your business:

Every post, every video, needs a CTA.

Ask your audience to follow you, visit your website, or comment on your post.

Clear, direct CTAs increase engagement and tell people how they can take the next step if they find your content valuable.

5. Low-Quality Visuals

We all know that quality matters.

If your videos or photos don’t look good, your audience won’t take you seriously.

What this means for your business:

Invest in half-decent video and audio setups to make sure your content looks as professional as possible.

Even small tweaks like better lighting or a clearer background can make a huge difference.

People are more likely to engage with content that looks polished and well-produced.

Bottom Line:

It’s all about being strategic with your content.

Track your results, speak directly to your audience, and keep refining your approach.
