Have you heard this one?
"The trouble with not having a goal is that you can spend your life running up and down the field and never score."
- Bill Copeland
It’s less than 1 month until the new financial year starts here in Australia, so it’s prime time for many of us to set our business goals for the year.
But let's be honest, most of us won’t.
You’re busy.
It can feel overwhelming.
Or not worth the time.
But we want you to score.
So today, we’re sharing our favourite approach to defining your goals and getting big results.
3 STEPS TO ACHIEVING BIG GOALS
Step 1: Identify Your Main Goal
Start with your central goal for the year.
What’s the big, bold achievement you want for your business in the next 12 months?
If you don’t know this, you’re likely to end up being that player, running up and down the field, working super hard, and never scoring.
For a soccer team, the big goal may be to win a championship; for you, it might be to double your revenue or launch a new service.
Whatever it is, start by writing down your big goal.
Note: Please, don't just say "increase sales."
Make it SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.
Step 2: Build Your Game Plan with Supporting Goals
Your main goal is your destination for the year, but you need a game plan to get there.
That's where supporting goals come in.
We recommend having smaller goals in each of the six areas of business health, that when you add up together, will enable you to achieve your big goal.
So for a soccer team, to win the championship, they need to set supporting goals in areas like fitness, nutrition, teamwork, leadership, etc.
In your business, you should have goals in:
- Strategy: e.g. What adjustments do you need to make to your overall plan to achieve your main goal?
-
Finance: e.g. How will you manage your finances to support your main goal?
- Operations: e.g. How can you streamline processes & systems to achieve your main goal?
- Customer: e.g. How will you improve the customer experience and attract new clients to achieve your main goal?
- Leadership: e.g. What can you do to empower your team to achieve your main goal?
- Self-Leadership: e.g. How will you develop yourself as a leader and individual to reach your main goal?
By setting clear goals within each of these 6 areas, you create a comprehensive game plan to achieve your goal.
Step 3: Make it Happen Every Week
Here's where you make it happen!
To stay accountable and consistently work towards your big goal, use our very simple Monday Morning Checklist:
- Am I clear on my next steps? (e.g. Do you know exactly what actions you need to take this week for each goal?)
- Is it time blocked? (e.g. Have you scheduled dedicated time in your calendar to work on these goals?)
- How am I going to stay accountable? Who or what will hold you accountable for completing your weekly tasks? (Consider a mastermind group, coach or accountability partner)
With this, progress, not perfection, is key.
Taking daily steps forward will lead to big goals.
And with that in mind, we’d love to hear your big goal!
