We’ve all had that one bad boss, right?

The kind of experience that still makes you cringe just thinking about it.

And if you’ve been through that, it probably won’t surprise you to hear that bad bosses are the #1 reason people leave companies.

The research has consistently shown the top 3 reasons people leave are:

  1. A bad boss
  2. No opportunities for career progression
  3. Being offered something better elsewhere (higher salary, better culture, etc.)

What’s equally interesting is when they tend to leave.

It’s usually around reflection points: work anniversaries, the New Year, birthdays, or after events with family & friends (e.g. think weddings or high school reunions).

These moments naturally make people question where they are in life and at work.

If they feel they’re not where they want to be, they start thinking about making a change.

What’s this all mean?

It means your team will reflect on whether to stay or go throughout the year.

Your job, as their leader, is to create an environment that makes them want to stay.

And with the end of the year not that far off, now’s the perfect time to get ahead of any "New Year’s reflections" that might lead your team to jump ship.

Here are some questions you can use to consider whether your team members will decide to stay:

RETAINING YOUR TEAM: QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF

If you want to keep your best team members, think about whether you're meeting their needs:

1. On being a good boss:

  • Are my people clear on where we’re going as a business?
  • Do they understand how their role fits into our big-picture goals?
  • Do they feel supported, heard, and recognised?

2. On providing career progression:

  • Do my people see a clear path for growth within the company?
  • Are there learning and development opportunities available?
  • Do they feel like their skills and strengths are recognised and leveraged?

3. On making sure what you offer is competitive:

  • Are the salaries and benefits I offer in line with market standards?
  • Does our company culture promote engagement, creativity, and collaboration?
  • Do we offer perks or work-life balance initiatives that make people want to stay?

Bottom line:

If you want to keep your best people, focus on these three areas: being a great boss, providing clear growth opportunities, and ensuring your company remains a place people want to be.

We’ve been working with several clients on this very challenge—helping them retain their best talent.
