Given our Olympics obsession, we couldn't pass up the opportunity to talk sports and business one more time as the 2024 games wrap up :)
Aussie swimmer Cam McEvoy’s story is a perfect example.
After a disappointing Tokyo Olympics, he was experiencing burnout and questioning whether his career was over.
Fast-forward to Paris 2024, and he’s back on top, with a gold in the 50m freestyle.
What can us business owners learn from his comeback?
Read on for 3 takeaways:
HOW TO GO FROM BURNOUT TO GOLD IN YOUR BUSINESS:
1. Work smarter, not harder
After Tokyo, it would have been really easy for Cam to conclude he needed to work harder if he wanted to get back on top.
He didn’t do this.
Instead, he used his degrees in physics and math to study the science of freestyle sprinting and training.
From this, he radically reduced his time in the pool (swimming is notorious for hours and hours and hours of training), using what he learned to train smarter, not harder.
The Lesson:
Don't assume you need to work more hours or just 'get more done' to grow your business. Work smarter, not harder.
2. Model Others' Success
Ever heard the phrase, 'stand on the shoulders of giants'?
It means learning from those who have already achieved great things.
Cam did just that — he studied the techniques of other high-performance athletes, like sprint cyclists and runners, and adapted their approaches to swimming.
The Lesson:
Study what successful businesses are doing, including in other industries and fields. Find those who have the success you want, and adapt their strategies to your business.
3. Share Your Learnings
The best way to improve is to learn from others, but that only happens when others are willing to share what they know.
Cam has said he's going to share everything about his new training approach, believing it can revolutionise sprint swimming and benefit up and comers.
The Lesson:
Don’t keep your secrets to yourself!
Share your learnings and experiences with others.
It's how we all get better, and you might just inspire someone else’s comeback story.
For us, Cam's story is a powerful reminder that success isn’t always linear.
There will be setbacks.
But if you're feeling stuck in rut, you can get out and back on top.
As business coaches, we help our clients with this every day - to work smarter and model success, so they have their own success stories to share.
