Steve has been coaching our boys in their first-ever basketball team this year. 🏀🎉
It's been pretty fun and rewarding to help 6-8 year olds learn the sport, and of course, there are all sorts of parallels between it and business.
Here's one we love: The Escape Dribble
The idea is simple:
When you have a defender right up against you, you don't always just plow forward, trying to get around them.
Instead, you dribble backward, away from the defender.
This gives you a better view of the court and more room to plan your next move.
The perspective you get from 'escaping' is what actually allows you to move forward more effectively.
This same principle applies to business.
Sometimes, when you're up against it, the best thing to do is to 'escape'.
In this case, you're not escaping to give up, but rather to assess the situation, and choose your next move more strategically.
So, in honor of the Comeback Kids' lessons in the escape dribble, here are 3 signs you might need it in your business:
3 SIGNS IT'S TIME TO ESCAPE DRIBBLE
1. You Have No Time
If you’re constantly rushing from one thing to the next with no breathing room, it’s a red flag.
Being too close to the day-to-day can cloud your vision.
When you step back, you give yourself space to evaluate how you’re spending your time and what’s actually moving the needle for your business.
2. You’re Constantly Frustrated by Your Team
If your team consistently falls short of your expectations or you find yourself irritated by their work, it might be time to take a step back.
Get some distance to reassess if the real issue is with the team or if it’s your processes, communication, or expectations that need adjustment.
3. Your Customers Are Leaving or Not Renewing
If you notice your customers aren’t coming back or aren’t renewing their services, it’s time to pause and figure out why.
Sometimes you’re so focused on getting new business that you miss the signals from the ones you already have.
Taking a step back can help you understand their needs and where you might be falling short.
Bottom Line:
Just like in basketball, in these cases, the escape dribble isn’t about retreating.
It’s about gaining perspective so you can make the right move.
If you find yourself stretched too thin, frustrated, or losing customers, don’t just push forward.
Step back, reassess, and make the necessary changes for long-term success.

TLDR:
- In basketball, an Escape Dribble allows players to move back from a defender in order to gain perspective and make better decisions on how to move forward.
- This concept can be valuable in your business as well; especially if you notice that: you have no time, you're frustrated by your team, or you're losing customers.
- Taking a step back lets you evaluate your next move more strategically. Reach out if you need help with this!
