Be honest… how do you really feel about marketing?

If you’re anything like us, the answer used to be: kind of uncomfortable.

We didn’t (and still don’t) want to be pushy or overly salesy, but didn’t know what to do instead.

Here’s what we learned that made the biggest difference:

We recognised that, done well, marketing is a way to serve others —to connect with people, help solve their problems, and build trust.

Now, we tell our clients the same thing:  marketing is about relationships, not transactions.

3 WAYS TO SHIFT YOUR MARKETING MINDSET


1. Listen First

People buy from businesses that get them.

When you talk to your customers and truly listen, you get to know their pain points, challenges and goals.

Your marketing then becomes much more personal and authentic when you can show you understand their challenges and can help solve them.

Example: Take the time to really get to know your leads and clients - ask questions and listen to understand them better. Design your marketing around their challenges & show how you can solve them.


2. Build Relationships, Not Just Transactions

The goal isn’t a quick sale—it’s a long-term connection.

People want to know, like, and trust those they buy from, and this happens over time, when you put effort into building a real relationship with them.

Example: One of our favourite marketing avenues is relationship-oriented networking.

Joining a referral-based networking group, like BNI or Bx, and do wonders for growing your business through building relationships first.


3. Focus on Providing Value

This is the Golden Rule: marketing isn’t about selling—it’s about serving.

When you focus on helping your audience with useful, authentic content, you naturally attract the right clients.

Example: We try to make this newsletter exactly that. Every week, our only goal is to share valuable, actionable insights, in the hope that they’re valuable for you and growing your business.


Bottom Line:

Marketing doesn’t have to feel pushy or uncomfortable.

When you shift your mindset to focus on relationships, solving problems, and providing real value, it becomes a way to serve—not sell.
