Hey there!
Do you know the value of your business?
If someone walked in today wanting to buy your company, how much could you ask for?
Most small business owners don’t know.
And unfortunately, many don’t start thinking about the value of their business until it’s too late.
It only really comes up when you want to sell.
That’s when you start imagining your future after you sell, along with all the things you’d use the windfall on.
And you start to wonder…
“How much can I sell this for?”
But that’s when you realise you need a more valuable business than you have.
This can be a hard moment.
Because now you have 2 options : put another 3 years into your business to increase its value, or accept a sale price you’re not happy with.
We’re seeing this a lot in our world, and we don’t want it to happen to you.
So today, we’re kicking off our new series on increasing the value of your business, starting with one of the most important ideas of all:
Build business value now, create freedom later.
Let’s dive in.
BUILD VALUE NOW, CREATE FREEDOM LATER
Here’s the good news.
Building business value isn’t some mysterious, MBA-only thing.
It’s just making a handful of smart moves that reduce risk, improve profit, and make the business less dependent on you.
And when you start doing that now, you create freedom later.
Here are 3 simple reasons to start.
1. It’s not that hard (you just need to focus on the right things)
Most owners assume “increasing business value” means they need to overhaul everything.
They usually don’t.
In reality, the biggest value gains often come from a few predictable areas, like:
- more consistent revenue (and ideally recurring revenue)
- healthier margins
- clearer systems and processes
- a team that can run things without you in the middle
- better reporting, so you actually know what’s going on
You don’t need perfection.
You just need progress in the areas that matter most.
As a simple starting point, ask yourself:
- If I disappeared for 4 weeks, what would break first?
- What work still relies on me that shouldn’t?
- Where are we inconsistent, sales, delivery, quality, cash flow?
- What would make this business easier to run in the next 12 months?
Those answers will usually point you straight to the value levers worth improving.
2. You can get help (and you don’t have to figure it out on your own)
This is where a lot of owners get stuck.
They know the business could be stronger, but they:
- don’t know where to start
- don’t want to waste time on the wrong projects
- are already flat out running the business
And that’s exactly why getting the right support makes such a difference.
Because you don’t need more information.
You need a clear plan, prioritised steps, and someone to keep you honest on the execution.
This is the work we do with clients all the time, helping them:
- work out what will increase value the most
- reduce owner reliance without losing control
- improve profitability and consistency
- build systems and team accountability
- create a plan that actually gets done
If you’re serious about freedom later, getting support now can save you years of trial and error.
3. It gets you the outcome you actually want later
At the end of the day, this isn’t about selling for the sake of selling.
It’s about the life you want on the other side.
The business is your vehicle.
Building value is how you make sure the vehicle actually gets you where you want to go.
And when your business is valuable, you have options.
You can:
- sell when the timing is right, not when you’re exhausted
- hold out for the right buyer, not just the fastest one
- step away properly instead of being dragged back in
- negotiate from strength
- get the financial outcome that funds the next chapter you’re picturing
Not too shabby, right?
⭐ Bottom line
If you want more freedom later, please don’t get caught out.
Don’t leave building business value until the last minute.
Start now, while you’ve got time to do it properly, and enjoy the freedom it creates along the way.

TLDR
- Most owners don’t think about business value until they’re ready to sell, and that’s when the options feel painful
- Building value isn’t complicated, focus on a few high impact areas like consistent revenue, healthy margins, systems, and reducing reliance on you
- You can get help to prioritise the right moves and actually get them implemented
- The payoff is freedom and choice later, on your terms, with the outcome you actually want
