Hey there!

“Find out who you are. And do it on purpose.”

Dolly Parton said that, and honestly, I love her for it.

I used to sort of like Dolly.

Obviously, I appreciated the music, the humour, the outfits and the hair, because I’m not a monster.

But then I listened to a podcast that did a deep dive on her life and career, and now I’m a full admirer.

Did you know she wrote “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You” on the same day?

She also famously refused to sell Elvis the publishing rights to “I Will Always Love You”, which turned out to be a very smart business decision.

She is iconic.

And very intentional.

Which is the whole point of this week’s newsletter.

Because valuable businesses don’t happen by accident.

They’re built on purpose.

And the best way to increase your business value is to create reliable, predictable revenue streams that give you more stability now and more options later.

Here are our favourite Dolly-inspired ways to think about it:

How to build predictable revenue, the Dolly Parton way

1. Know what you’re known for

Dolly is not trying to be everything to everyone.

She knows who she is, and she has built a whole world around it.

That is exactly what strong businesses do.

Predictable revenue starts with clarity:

  • Who do you serve best?
  • What problem do you solve best?
  • Why do people come back to you?
  • What are you known for that competitors can’t easily copy?

When your offer is too broad, your revenue is harder to predict because you’re always chasing whatever work appears.

But when you know your lane, and you build your services around what your best clients actually need, it becomes much easier to create repeat business, referrals and ongoing work.

Ask yourself: What do we want to be known for, and are our offers clearly built around that?

2. Don’t give yourself away too cheaply

As I mentioned, Dolly famously held on to the publishing rights to “I Will Always Love You” when Elvis wanted to record it.

Imagine saying no to Elvis.

But she understood the value of what she had created.

A lot of business owners do the opposite.

They underprice their best work, say yes to low-value clients, or keep delivering extra “little things” for free because they don’t want to make it awkward.

But if you want predictable revenue, your best work needs to be properly valued and properly packaged.

That might mean turning your most valuable expertise into a retainer, advisory package, maintenance plan, ongoing support offer, membership, or repeatable service.

Not because you’re trying to squeeze more out of clients.

Because your expertise creates ongoing value, and your business model should reflect that.

Ask yourself: What do clients keep needing from us that we haven’t properly packaged or priced?

3. Turn the hits into a catalogue

Dolly didn’t build a career on one song.

She built a catalogue.

That matters in business too.

If your revenue depends on one hero offer, one big client, one sales channel, or one busy season, things can feel very exciting and very terrifying, often in the same week.

Predictable revenue comes from building a stronger catalogue of revenue streams.

That doesn’t mean adding 47 new offers and confusing everyone. Please don’t do that.

It means identifying the logical next step for your best clients.

For example:

  • A project-based business might add ongoing support.
  • A professional service firm might create advisory packages.
  • A trades business might add maintenance plans.
  • A consultant might offer quarterly strategy reviews.
  • A product business might build subscriptions, replenishment reminders, or loyalty offers.

The goal is not more complexity.

The goal is more repeatability.

Ask yourself: What is the next logical thing our best clients need after they first work with us?

4. Keep showing up between the big moments

Dolly has been relevant for decades because she keeps showing up.

She doesn’t disappear for years and then panic-post when she needs attention.

A lot of businesses do exactly that.

They market when things get quiet.

They follow up when they need work.

They call referral partners when the pipeline is looking scary.

That’s not a strategy.

That’s a stress response.

Predictable revenue is built through small, consistent habits before you urgently need the sale.

That might include a consistent rhythm of checking in with past clients, booking regular sales conversations, nurturing referral partners, sharing useful content, reviewing your pipeline weekly, and following up properly instead of letting good leads vanish.

Ask yourself: What simple sales or marketing rhythm would help us stay visible before we need work?

Quick gut check

If you stopped selling for 60 days, what would happen?

  • Would revenue keep flowing?
  • Would existing clients keep buying?
  • Would your pipeline still have good opportunities in it?
  • Would your team know who to follow up with?
  • Or would things get a little stressful?

No judgement if the answer is stressful.

Most businesses start that way.

But the sooner you make revenue more intentional, the more valuable, stable and enjoyable your business becomes.

⭐ Bottom line

Whether you want to sell one day, step back a little, or simply build something that feels less stressful and more profitable to run, take inspiration from Dolly and get on it by building more predictable revenue.

P.S.

Next week, we’re looking at another big value lever, healthy margins, because being busy is great, but being busy and not making enough profit is a very annoying hobby.

TLDR

  • Predictable revenue makes your business more valuable.
  • Build it by:
    • getting clear on what you’re known for
    • packaging your value properly
    • creating logical next offers
    • showing up consistently before you need the sale
  • Take inspiration from Dolly, know who you are, and do it on purpose.
