If you’ve ever spent Christmas in Australia, you know exactly what Boxing Day feels like.
It’s hot; the kind of heat where your body feels one step slower than your brain.
You’re full from yesterday.
Everyone’s tired.
And moving from couch to fridge is just as much about getting leftovers as it is about blasting yourself with cold air.
That’s the funny thing about an Aussie Christmas.
It’s upside down in so many ways, and those quirks make it the perfect backdrop for our holiday series, Christmas in Flip-Flops, where we take the strangest parts of an Australian Christmas and turn them into surprisingly useful business lessons.
Which brings us to Lesson #3: The Boxing Day Principle.
There’s something about Boxing Day that just feels so good.
The pressure of Christmas Day is over.
The rush is gone.
Everyone seems to just exhale.
It’s slower, quieter, and calmer, and that is GOOD thing.
Something to be appreciated and taken advantage of.
And it’s exactly the same in your business after you’ve gone through a big push.
Applying the Boxing Day Principle in your business is about embracing that same pause to rest, recover, and reset.
Let’s dive in:
THE BOXING DAY PRINCIPLE: Embrace the rest & recovery time
The slowdown after a big push is not something to fight or rush through.
It’s something to embrace.
Boxing Day is the perfect example.
You’re not meant to be productive.
You’re meant to rest, breathe, and let your system come back online.
Here’s why it’s so vital:
1- The slowdown lets your body and brain recover
Boxing Day is the day everyone melts into the couch.
No guilt.
No pressure.
Just rest.
And after a big push in your business, you need the same thing.
Your body needs to reset, your brain needs to decompress, and your emotions need to level out.
Rest is not laziness.
Rest is the recovery phase that makes future clarity and energy possible.
2- Rest creates capacity for reflection later — not immediately
Most people try to reflect too soon.
They hit a big milestone, the high fades, the slump hits, and they force themselves into:
- “What does this mean?”
- “What do I need to fix?”
- “What should I change?”
That is Boxing Day-level thinking trying to do New Year’s Day work.
Boxing Day is not the moment for insight.
It is the moment to stop, breathe, and let your system recharge.
Reflection comes after rest, and it is always better quality when your energy is full again.
3- The calm is the foundation for your next move
When you rest properly, something subtle happens.
Your clarity comes back.
Your perspective widens.
Your next step becomes obvious instead of forced.
That’s when you start to:
- tidy up what slipped during the sprint
- reset your systems
- align priorities again
- think about what needs to change in January
Not from exhaustion, but from steadiness, so please: Rest first, reflect second, and decide third.
Bottom line
The slump after a big push is not a sign you’re falling behind.
Your system is telling you to pause.
Use it the same way you use Boxing Day, as a chance to rest without expectation.
And enjoy those leftovers!

Merry Christmas 🎄
TLDR
- Just like when you go from Christmas to Boxing Day, the drop in energy after a big push in your business is normal
- Make sure you rest first, before reflecting or pushing again
- Slowing down resets your system
- Give yourself space to recover so your clarity and energy can come back
